The first thoughts when you apply to an Oxford College aren’t such that would necessarily focus on it as a centre of social activity, but that certainly isn’t true at St John’s! Here at St John’s no matter what activities you like to involve yourself in there is something for everyone.

Starting with the ‘party’ side of John’s there are the infamous bops (for those not attune to the Oxford lingo, it’s basically a fortnightly thing on a Saturday where no good clubs are open, the pubs have kicked all the students out and we come together in a basement with disco lights and a sound system). Expect lots of cheap ‘cocktails’, some rather interesting music choices from behind the deck and an array of creative costumes to fit with the theme.

A more ‘classy’ event is that of the twice termly JCR Guest Dinner. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dress up in black tie and show to your friends the best John’s has to offer. The event is a themed four-course dinner in Hall with pre and post drinks to ensure that you get the maximum time to enjoy the alcohol, entertainment and posing with everyone looking lovely in their black tie.

If alcohol is not really your thing don’t fret John’s has much more to offer. There are organised theme park trips and many more charity events such as Poker Nights. We also have performances from Oxford A-cappella and improvised comedy groups. The JCR also runs a regular Bar Quiz for all those who like to test their general knowledge (and those who are pleased when they manage to get even one answer on University Challenge).

Finally as John’s is in such a good location you are never short of things to do. Within a couple of minutes’ walk there are theatres, which show a wide variety both professional and student productions so there is always something that will appeal, and cinemas (two Odeons showing the latest films). So even if you’re stuck for something to do in John’s (which is very unlikely) you will find something to do which is barely even out of college.
