St John’s Fundraising:
Ashley and Luke, our Charities Reps, work hard to organise a number of events (such as film nights) to raise money for the St John’s JCR Charities Fund. In Michaelmas 2011, we also had a special St John’s charity week, involving a whole series of events including a charity auction at which over £700 was raised!
St John’s as part of RAG:
St John’s also coordinates its fundraising with the university-wide Raise and Give (RAG), which is responsible for overseeing all charity fundraising by Oxford Students. RAG run a number of events, from skydives to RAG blind date, themed bar crawls to Mr & Miss Oxford, all in aid of having a good time and lining the pockets of worthy causes. This term St John’s students have participated in several RAG events, including the bungee jump, mega-raid, and the RAG ball.

Giving To Charity:
There are two main ways in which you can use the JCR to give money to charity:
Charity Motions: 50% of the St John’s Charity Budget is spent on charitable donations through this means. This is a great way that the JCR can help smaller individual projects which really mean something to the members of the JCR.Any member of the JCR may bring a motion asking for up to £500. If the amount we agree to give exceeds the budget, the fund is split in proportion to the amounts agreed for each cause.
If you would like to bring a charities motion, please read the information about submitting a motion on the JCR here and send your motion to the JCR Secretary ([email protected]), using this template.
Annual Charities Ballot: The other 50% of our budget goes towards the annual charities budget. Three charities are chosen by the members of the JCR in an Annual Charities Vote, which coincides with the Committee elections. Over the course of the year these three charities receive an equal allocation of the portion of the Fund dedicated to the Annual Charities Vote.
This year we are supporting:
- Helen and Douglas House
- KEEN Oxford
- The Gatehouse
If you would like to know details on any of these charities please email either of your dedicated charities reps.
Nominations for the annual charities ballot open in Michaelmas on Sunday 3rd week and will close on Sunday of 6th week. If you wish to make a nomination please email the charities reps a completed nomination form with the name of your charity and a short blurb.
