Meet Your Committee!

President: Jess Colston

Hi, I’m Jess, your President. I listen to and represent your views to College, both directly and through the numerous committees I sit on with the Vice President. An important job of mine is to negotiate Rents and Charges along with the MCR and other officers in Trinity term to try to get the best deal for JCR members. I also meet with the JCR Presidents of other colleges and the OUSU Officers to keep up to date with what is happening across the university. At JCR meetings I am the chair and ensure that everyone gets a chance to have their opinion heard and hopefully also finish at a reasonable time! I’d love to hear your ideas for the JCR and help you with any problems and concerns you might have, so please get in touch!

Secretary: Alastair Graham

Hello! I’m your Secretary, Alastair. I am responsible for compiling the agendas, writing the minutes and telling a (bad) joke in JCR Meetings if half the room wants it (procedural motion 13h, because I am sure that you love the JCR Constitution too). I sit on some of the college committees and help with the Rent negotiations with college in Trinity Term. My role is to be the custodian of the Constitution which is currently being reformed by the Constitutional Reform Committee which is enjoyable. Also, I must show tender loving care to our Standing Policy and make sure that the JCR Officer stays tidy which is harder than you may think. I am also meant to keep this website up to date and provide you with copies of committee minutes should you wish. Each term I will also make the term card showing all the many social and sporting events that our JCR offers. There is lots to do and I have many additional projects that I would like to work on including a FAQ document and termly summaries of what they JCR does.

Academic Affairs Officer: Dan Sowood

Hello, I am Dan Sowood, your JCR Academic Affairs (AccAff) Officer. I am responsible for ensuring that the academic needs of the JCR are met and that any concerns or problems that you have regarding your academic life within College are listened to, addressed and acted upon by College. To that end I aim to be as approachable as possible; please email, Facebook or stop me face-to-face. My primary link with College is through my position on the Educational Policy (EdPol) and Academic Services Committees, along with the JCR President and Vice-President. Our representation on this Committee ensures that the JCR has a direct voice to College on academic issues. I also endeavour to help the members of the JCR by providing sessions focussing on various parts of academic life: Study Skills, Revision, Exam Preparation and Careers at appropriate points in the academic year. I am always keen to collaborate both with other members of the Committee and the wider JCR so please get in touch if you think there is something we can work together on, or if you have any ideas that you would like to see implemented.

Access and Admissions Officer: Amelia Wrigley

As Access and Admissions Officer, my role is to work as part of the wider access team (including the Schools Liason Officer and the Student Ambassadors) to ensure that St. John’s is accessible to everyone, regardless of background. By ‘accessible’ we mean that everyone feels comfortable applying to, learning and living in the college. As part of my position, I encourage school visits and help to co-ordinate open days and the interview period. I am also responsible for organising the annual college ‘Access Roadshow’ to our linked regions (Brighton, Hove, Sussex, Harrow and Ealing). Within college I aim to raise awareness of wider outreach initiatives and facilitate discussion of wider access issues, such as tuition fees and bursaries. I also represent the college at OUSU Access Committee. I am responsible for updating the alternative prospectus, in addition to maintaining the applicants and access sections of the JCR website. If you would like to get more involved in college/university outreach initiatives or have any questions (or ideas!) about access then please do get in touch.

Disabilities Officer: Clementine Smith

As Disabilities Officer, my most important role is to support members of the JCR who identify as having a disability. Additionally, this position involves spreading awareness about disability and trying to get rid of any stigma attached to disability at St John’s. My goals are to encourage students to disclose their disabilities to the college and university (so as to access all support available), to try to improve accessible bathroom facilities in college, and to increase awareness concerning invisible disabilities (such as dyspraxia, fibromyalgia, ASD). I am also interested in organising mental health drop-in sessions or meet and greets with staff from the counselling service to reduce people’s anxiety about accessing these services. Furthermore, by inviting suitably qualified speakers to lead information sessions on a range of topics related to disability I hope to improve awareness among JCR members.

Domestic Officers: Frances Belsham and Aalia Hulf

Hi we’re Aalia and Fran your new domestic officers! Our role comprises of taking care of all the JCR’s domestic needs. As mediators between college and the JCR, we use our position to insure the JCR is satisfied with matters such as Hall food and the laundry system. For example we are looking into improving the standards of the vegetarian meals provided in hall and provisioning spare commoners gowns and laundry cards for emergencies. We also provide a ‘camp bed’ scheme whereby one can borrow a camp bed for when guests visit. We host a number of events, including ‘Dial-a-Domestic-Angel’ to provide students with essential domestic items, and ‘JCR Desserts’, which run once a term. However, the key JCR event that we hold are the twice-termly Guest Dinners. We offer JCR members the chance to ballot for a four course sit-down meal in Hall, with a champagne reception and post-drinks, with the option of bringing up to two guests. We choose the theme, the menu and decorate the hall, as well as organising the guest list and the seating plan. If you have any domestic-related queries please feel free to contact us! DomSec love xx

Welfare Officers: Louise Chegwidden and Rohan Hazell

Hi, we’re the Welfare Officers! As you know, we provide plenty of free food at various events, but we’re also here to provide support of all kinds - if you need help with something, some information, anything welfare related or just a chat, we’re always here - there is no problem too small!

As Peer Supporters ourselves, we also work closely with the John’s Peer Supporters who are part of the welfare team, and through various committees in the JCR and university-wide we try to do all that we can to keep everyone happy and healthy.

We’re really passionate about welfare, and know Oxford is a demanding and pressurised environment - we’ll listen to anything you can think of that would help you or others.

Please don’t hesitate to drop by, call, text, email, Facebook message, Skype, or even send a letter. We’re here to help!

Women’s Officer: Katy Haigh

Hi there! My name is Katy and I’m your Women’s Officer, which means I’m the representative voice for all members of our JCR who identify partly or wholly as female: I endeavour to be a supportive point of contact to those I represent, so please feel free to come and chat to me or send me an email any time.
It is my job to ensure that our voices and needs are considered by raising awareness of issues affecting women at St Johns, the university as a whole, and the wider world. I do this this by hosting a variety of events, socials and campaigns, including:
Women’s lunches with inspirational speakers, self-care evenings which offer women in our college the chance to get together in a safe and relaxing environment, maintaining the JCR’s free sanitary product scheme, running sexual consent workshops, organising first respondent training, heading the St John’s Feminist Society, and loads more!
If you’d like to find out more about future Women’s Officer projects, want to engage further with gender equality, or fancy a chat about feminism, I encourage you to contact me!
