St John’s has one of the largest and most eclectic JCR art collections in Oxford, featuring the works of a number of prominent, contemporary British artists. Some of the highlights of the collection include a still life by the impressionist Doris Hatt, a caricature by Max Beerbohm and an etching of a nude man by the acclaimed Welsh artist Augustus John.
Members of the JCR are very lucky in having the opportunity at the beginning of each academic year to ballot electronically for an artwork of their choice to decorate their rooms. These are collected from the JCR art store at the beginning of Michaelmas and returned at the end of Trinity under the supervision of the JCR Art Reps. Photos of the collection can be found on our Facebook page “SJC JCR Art Collection”.
